Preschool Draws Town Officials on Earth Day

Published May 14, 2016 at 6:04PM

MIDDLETOWN, NY, April 22, 2016- Earth Day 2016 was in full swing at On My Way Early Learning & Childcare Center. Children and teachers worked hard preparing for this year’s Earth Day celebration held Friday April 22, 2016, by constructing a town and a farm from recycled materials. Parents and students worked hard at home to contribute vehicles and animals to the center’s Earth Day project. Residents of Braemar Assisted Living also added their own creations to the recycled design.

Town of Wallkill Supervisor, Dan DePew, and Public Works Commissioner, Lou Ingrassia, visited On My Way Early Learning & Childcare Center to show their support of the center’s new S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program. “The children were so proud to tell us about the farm animals they made and what recycled materials they used in order to create their recycled farm,” said Dan DePew, Town of Wallkill Supervisor. The recycled town and recycled farm were major projects constructed through the S.T.E.M. curriculum. S.T.E.M. teaches students in small groups with hands-on lesson plans about real world problems and how to solve these challenges. Children learned about recycling and how it affects their plant. “I was really impressed with the town they created out of recycled materials. They had cars, buildings, people, trains, airplanes, boats and shopping centers,” said Lou Ingrassia, Public Works Commissioner.

“When our S.T.E.M. teachers came up with the idea of making a town and farm out of recycled materials I was excited about this unique Earth Day project,” said Peggy Fuentes owner of On My Way Early Learning & Childcare Center. “To be honest, I am amazed at the level of detail, creativity, enthusiasm and parent participation this exciting initiative has sparked.” Fuentes added, “I am thrilled that residents of Braemar Assisted Living were able to participate in contributing their recycled creations to our town and farm.”
